Copyright Policy

Effective Date: July 18, 2026

Tilia lets users upload books for their own personal reading and vocabulary study, and — subject to the review process described below — share suitable works publicly with other users. We respect the intellectual property rights of others and expect the same of our users. This policy supplements Section 4 of our Terms of Service.

What users may upload

You may only upload content that you own, that is in the public domain, that is distributed under a license permitting the use, or that you otherwise have permission to use. Uploading content for private personal study and publicly sharing content are treated differently:

• Private uploads are visible only to the uploading account (and to specific people the uploader explicitly shares with).
• Public listings are reviewed by us before they become visible to other users. A book only appears in Tilia's public library after the uploader has affirmed they hold the necessary rights and our review has approved the listing.

Reporting copyright infringement (takedown notices)

If you believe content on Tilia infringes a copyright you own or represent, please send a notice to our designated copyright agent:

To help us act quickly, your notice should include the information described in 17 U.S.C. § 512(c)(3):

1. Identification of the copyrighted work you claim has been infringed (or a representative list, if multiple works are covered by one notice).
2. Identification of the material you claim is infringing, with enough information for us to locate it (for example, the book title and author as shown in Tilia, or a link).
3. Your name, mailing address, telephone number, and email address.
4. A statement that you have a good-faith belief that the use of the material is not authorized by the copyright owner, its agent, or the law.
5. A statement, under penalty of perjury, that the information in your notice is accurate and that you are the copyright owner or authorized to act on the owner's behalf.
6. Your physical or electronic signature.

We review notices promptly and remove or disable access to content when appropriate. We may provide the uploader with a copy of the notice.

Counter-notices

If your content was removed and you believe the removal was a mistake or misidentification, you may send a counter-notice to the same address containing: identification of the removed material and where it appeared; your name, address, telephone number, and email address; a statement under penalty of perjury that you have a good-faith belief the material was removed as a result of mistake or misidentification; a statement that you consent to the jurisdiction of the federal district court for your address (or, if outside the United States, any judicial district in which Tilia may be found) and that you will accept service of process from the person who filed the original notice; and your physical or electronic signature.

Repeat infringers

We terminate the accounts of users who repeatedly infringe copyright, in appropriate circumstances, consistent with Section 4 and Section 7 of our Terms of Service.

Misrepresentation

Knowingly making material misrepresentations in a takedown notice or counter-notice may expose you to liability under 17 U.S.C. § 512(f). Please do not submit false claims.
